You can have anything you want in life if you dress for it.
Last week, we learned that Trevor Story will be participating in the 2021 Home Run Derby. We also know he’s been practicing, and over the weekend, he told Jeff Huson that he really wants to win:
All that practice is paying off. Story hit two home runs over the weekend, making a total of 11 on the season. In fact, let’s take a moment to admire again that three-run Saturday bomb:
The other Home Run Derby contestants (so far) are
The Home Run Derby is a big event, the Met Gala of Baseball (complete with a purple carpet), which raises the question of Story’s couture, given that players will wear “normal club jerseys” during the derby. If Edith Head is right and apparel sets the tone, then he needs to choose carefully — and we’re here to help. (I assume the road grays are not a choice since the Home Run Derby takes place at Coors Field.)
To be fair, it’s the Colorado Rockies’ attempt at a classic look, and pinstripes provide the added bonus of having a slimming effect. Plus, Story looks good in them:
Perhaps we should follow the lead of Marc Jacobs: “I always find beauty in things that are odd and imperfect, they are much more interesting.” That would certainly be the purple pinstripes (which will probably be the choice of the Rockies’ front office).
Purple Jersey and White Pants
The pinstripes may be considered “classic Rockies,” but I’m a serious fan of the color the Rockies wear that no one else does, and that would be purple:
To quote Coco Chanel, “In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.” The Rockies purple jerseys are distinctive and electric (and should have been incorporated into the color of the All-Star Game jerseys
that were seemingly repurposed from the Atlanta jerseys). Besides, Story hit two home runs over the weekend wearing purple, and it just seems like a good idea to continue the trend.
I know the Rockies’ front office considers the purple pinstripes to be iconic, but for Rockies fans, it’s surely the black vests that echo Todd Helton’s 2007 NLCS catch. On a night when we’re hoping Trevor Story makes a bit of history himself, a black vest would not be a bad choice. A bit old school, certainly, but clearly distinctive.
To paraphrase Karl Lagerfeld, “One is never over-dressed or under-dressed with a Little Black Dress” (or a little black vest).
On Twitter, @TylerQInUtah added this innovation:

We think this is a terrific — if unconventional — option. (Gianni Versace would agree: “Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way to live.”)
This fashion decision may be more divisive than you think. A Twitter poll has indicated a (surprising) tie between the purple jersey and the black vest.
Also, accessories matter, so Story will need to think carefully about his spikes because, as Christian Louboutin notes, “Shoes transform your body language and attitude. They lift you physically and emotionally.” When hitting a lot of home runs at elevation, surely a little extra lift would be welcome. (We’re not worried: Trevor’s shoe game is exceptional.)

So we turn the question over to you: Which jersey should Trevor Story wear in the Home Run Derby?

Road Grays (since the Rockies will probably trade him before the end of the month)
